Hotels, motels, and dormitories

Hotels, motels, and dormitories
The following system analysis and analytical scorecard can be used to assess the use of rooftop unit with energy recovery in dormitories. The approach is based in part on the 2004 ASHRAE Handbook--Systems and Equipment, Chapter 1 "System Analysis and Selection" and the 2007 ASHRAE Handbook--Applications, Chapter 5, "Hotels, Motels, and Dormitories." In addition, our scoring is based on our own design, construction, commissioning, and building management experience. Scoring may differ based on project location, current costs, and local engineering experience.

The design intent of the HVAC system is to provide individual dormitory room HVAC space temperature control (no humidity control) within reasonable heating and cooling parameters and 5[degrees] dead-band. This month's "Back2Basics" focuses on the building/energy management portion of the system application while "HVACR Designer Tips" focuses on project closeout.

The analysis and selection of the optimum HVAC system for a specific project can be determined through energy and life-cycle system analysis software program studies. This assessment should be part of optimizing energy performance when pursuing LEED[R] project certification, as well as other high-performance grant programs.
